Breast Asymmetry

Did you know that most women have breasts that are different! One may be larger, smaller, have an odd shape or form or perhaps simply hang lower than the other. In most circumstances, this is considered “normal” and the differences are minor, requiring no correction. In some women however, this difference is a source of great embarrassment and concern. The asymmetry between their breasts is noticeable and they often seek consultation with our office for help. While each patient’s concerns are different, all share a common goal – to have two breasts about the same size and shape to allow them to wear clothes, a bathing suit and perhaps go braless in a tank-top without feeling like they’re being stared at.

Selecting the best method of correcting the differences is made only after carefully listening the concerns of each patient and performing a detailed examination. Some cases are corrected with a simple procedure on only one breast. More complicated cases may require surgery on both breasts and perhaps more than one surgical procedure to achieve the desired goals. Using the combined techniques of lifting, reconstruction and augmentation the breasts and nipples are positioned in a youthful position on the chest and all differences in position, volume, projection and form corrected as best as possible. These procedures are usually preformed under a light general anesthesia on an outpatient basis. The procedure usually lasts from 1 to 2 hours and patients leave the private operating facility or hospital with only a light bandage on each breast. A swift and uneventful recovery following breast lifting allows most patients to return to work within a few days following surgery.

Where is the procedure performed?

Minor procedures are performed in a private operating facility on an outpatient basis. More complicated and sometimes multi-staged procedures are performed in the hospital setting and may require an overnight stay.

How long does the procedure take?

In most cases, this procedure takes 1 to 1 ½ hours.

What kind of anesthesia will be required?

General anesthesia is the preferred method of anesthesia.

Can I have my breasts enlarged at the same time?

Yes, patients often have a combined procedure which corrects differences in shape or form of their breasts and augments their volume as well. Breast enlargement will add approximately 30 to 45 minutes on to the lifting procedure.

What will my breasts look like after surgery?

Following the procedure, many patients will notice their breasts are slightly higher and downward pointing then expected. This is normal and they will fall into a more normal position and transform into the desired pleasing form in the weeks following surgery.

When can I resume my normal activities?

Most patients can return to light activity and work within a few days following surgery. Return to normal physical activity, including sports, is permitted after 4 weeks.

Are there any risks to breast asymmetry surgery?

Generally, breast surgery is a very safe and reliable procedure. During your office consultation, Dr. Zelt will discuss with you the associated risks and complications. Fortunately, most are very uncommon and the vast majority of patients enjoy an uneventful surgery and recovery period.
