While neuromodulators affect the underlying muscles, dermal fillers are products injected under or into the skin that replace lost volume or fill lines and wrinkles associated with aging. These gel-like products are also injected using very fine needles or cannulae and are extremely safe and versatile.
As we age, our self-confidence and experience may grow but our skin’s youthfulness fades. Our appearance is no longer in harmony with how we feel on the inside. These changes in the skin are associated with the loss of a naturally occurring sugar called hyaluronic acid. When hyaluronic acid is lost, the skin loses its volume and elasticity causing wrinkles to form and the natural balance of our faces to change.
These changes can be reversed in both women and men with dermal fillers such as JUVÉDERM®. Dermal fillers are made with hyaluronic acid and their use smooths wrinkles and restores volume to the soft tissues. Treatments instantly reverse the signs of aging and restore a healthy youthful appearance to your face.
What areas of the face are treated with dermal fillers?
Dermal fillers are used for enhancing various areas of the face in both women and men:
- Adding volume to the cheeks and chin to restore a loss of volume and enhance the cheeks and chin for a more youthful appearance
- Lip rejuvenation and enhancement to gently restore volume and shape to your lips
- Smile line reduction and facial contouring to soften and gently restore a natural-looking shape to smile lines
Will your face still how emotions and expressions?
Dermal fillers are used to restore a more youthful appearance. They are not used to change your appearance, just turn the clock back a few years. Unlike Botox and Dysport, dermal fillers have no effect on the muscles of your face and your facial expressions. You can still frown, smile and show your normal expressions.
When can you see the results and how long will they last?
Patients instantly see results after just one treatment. The benefits can last for 1 to 2 years depending upon the product used and the area treatment.
What can I expect while having a treatment?
Having a dermal filler treatment is quick and easy. During your office visit, your concerns are carefully addressed to ensure that your goals are achieved. Treatments last from 15 to 30 minutes depending upon how many areas are being addressed. A specific amount of dermal filler is injected into the soft tissues restoring volume. This is done using very fine needles or cannulas. The procedure is done with little or no discomfort as most of the dermal fillers are combined with pain-reducing lidocaine. Sometimes there is mild redness in the areas injected but this clears very quickly. Most often there is no evidence that you had a treatment at all! A follow-up appointment is made 2 weeks after your treatment to assess your results and ensure your satisfaction.
What happens when the medication wears off?
Dermal fillers show instant results and are long-lasting. One to two years following your injection, the volume gained from the injection begins to fade. Patients return for treatments every year or two depending upon the areas treated and the product used.
What are the side effects of dermal fillers?
Generally, dermal fillers are very safe and reliable procedures for women and men. During your office consultation, Dr. Zelt or Katherine O’Neil our aesthetic injection specialist will discuss with you the associated risks and complications. Fortunately, most are very uncommon and the vast majority of patients enjoy an uneventful treatment period.

Stimulants
Over time the skin loses its full, firm and youthful appearance. Collagen is a protein in the skin that provides volume and keeps us looking youthful. As we age our bodies make less collagen and our skin loses its elasticity and volume. This gradual decrease in collagen leads to the appearance of wrinkles, lines, and folds.
Sculptra® Aesthetic is an injectable dermal filler made of poly-L-lactic acid that naturally stimulates the body to produce its own collagen. Sculptra® Aesthetic works by gradually increasing the volume of depressed areas to correct skin depressions, such as in skin creases, wrinkles, folds, scars and for skin aging. The effects of the treatment are noticed gradually over time, and many of our patients will receive a series of injections over the course of a few months to achieve optimal results. Clinical studies have shown that Sculptra® Aesthetic results can last up to two years which is significantly longer than other types of dermal fillers available today.
